"April Showers," a phrase suggesting the end of winter and the start of spring, came from the Brits! Who knew? It's believed in the UK that before spring can start, there must be heavy rainfall in April. And we all know that when it comes to rain gear, slickers just don't cut it. With our economy still sluggishly limping along, you might be surprised to hear that Barney's is preparing to open two new Co-ops, one in Brooklyn and one in Santa Monica, CA. But the retailer has seen healthy sales in recent months and they're ready to take advantage of their success and cash in while there's money to be made.
"We believe in expansion opportunities for the Co-op concept," Karl Hermanns, executive vice president of merchandise planning, marketing, e-commerce and operations, told Women's Wear Daily. "I don't think it will ever be a 100-store concept, but we do see opportunities for several more."
The new Co-op in Brooklyn -- a 6,300-square-foot building going in next to Trader Joe's -- will be at 194 Atlantic Avenue in the Cobble Hill neighborhood and should be open by mid-September. The Santa Monica property -- 5,400-square-feet and located at Santa Monica Place -- will be open by mid-August.
Barneys already has 19 Co-ops open, all of which offer shoppers ready to wear fashions with an emphasis on up and coming designers and denim.

Last night Derek Lam and Olivia Palermo co-chaired Housing Works' Fashion for Action 2009. A who's who of the fashion world including The Real Housewives of NYC's Alex McCord, Althea Harper from Project Runway, Jack Mackenroth from Project Runway, Robert Verdi, John Bartlett and others, turned up to help kick off the four-day charitable event, silent auction, and sample sale that raises funds for Housing Works' lifesaving services for homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.
Over 150 top designers have donated $1 million worth of merchandise that will be sold at 50 to 70 percent off retail prices. Designers and brands include Acne, Balenciaga, Band of Outsiders, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana, DVF, Fendi, Gucci, Hugo Boss, John Varvatos, Lacoste, Lanvin, Paul Smith, Ralph Lauren, Rogan, Theory, Yves Saint Laurent and many more.
Gilt Groupe, the official on-line sponsor of Fashion for Action 2009, has donated hundreds of fashion items for the sample sale and high-end designer merchandise for two special window installations at the Chelsea Thrift Shop (143 W. 17th St). The first window will be up until November 19, 2009. The second shop window will be installed on November 13 and run through November 26, 2009.
