There is, without a doubt, hardly anything better to have in your closet than the perfect tee. And what is perfect? Cotton. Washed and washed for softness. Dyed vintage colors. Slimmer fit. The kind of tee you can never have enough of. While sometimes it takes owing a t-shirt for years to get this kind of look, J.Crew is taking the waiting game out of the equation with their broken-in tees.
These are the kind of tees you can own in every color, ready to throw on under a blazer or with some sweat pants or just whenever you need the perfect underpinning to an outfit. Frankly, you should have a few extras lying around just in case boyfriends (...or exes...or hookups) run off with one. Believe us, they'll want to after the first wear.
Rarely is there such a joy in life like finding the perfect card to give someone. It is so treasured because there exists such a mass detritus of horrible cards for birthdays, anniversaries, births, special occasions and -- appropriate for this month -- Valentine's Day that it's almost worth just giving up and writing something on a blank piece of card stock. Thankfully, we have wonderfully creative people like Jessica King who knows a thing or two about making quirky, cute, perhaps sometimes unsettling but nevertheless beautiful cards for whatever special day may be approaching. How does she do it? Teeth, organs, and, of course, coffee:
How long have you been making cards?
Around October 2008 is when I got up and running with the Etsy shop. It started with envelopes which I refer to as "lopes," or, formally, "lopez." I started making envelopes out of vintage and patterned paper, because normal white envelopes are fun to decorate.
Why cards?
Well, after the envelopes I realized people aren't putting their change in the envelopes, so they needed something to write on. Also, it's fun! And cards are expensive, so rather than waste your money on a mediocre card you don't really like I can customize them and if I -- or you -- feel like putting a picture of a naked cowboy on a card, I have the freedom to do it.
With the midst of winter upon us, we're looking for one of two weekend getaways: the beach or the mountains. And what every good weekend warrior needs, whether playing in sand or snow, is a good weekend bag.
A.P.C.'s option -- though called a sac, of course -- is perfect in its simplicity and functionality. It's not covered in pockets and zippers, but chicly classic, the perfect size and duffle shape to open up, toss in a few choice pieces and throw over your shoulder for a jaunt off to some place that will allow you to escape whatever it is you need to get away from.
The A.P.C. navy week-end bag retails for $230 and is available by mail order (212.966.0069), at www.apc.fr, or in stores in New York (131 Mercer Street, 212.966.9685) or Los Angeles (619 N. Croft Avenue, West Hollywood, 323.297.0414
With bow ties getting an invigorating treatment from labels like Band of Outsiders and Steven Alan, if you aren't already partaking in this charming trend, it's time to start.
Thus we bring you David Hart & Co's line of bow ties which are predictably impressive given that neckware is the label's focus.
The bow ties themselves come in a selection of either Italian silk or Scottish wool, and we like that you can find classically stylish designs such as Glenn plaid (left) or festive tartan (right).
Beyond the classic, though, Hart also infuses fun prints like sock monkeys and smiling frogs on both his bow and regular ties, and -- come on -- that's just fun. And, if you're in a fluster on how to actually tie one of these, David Hart himself has a cute instructional video on YouTube that will have you looking dapper in no time.
David Hart & Co. ties and bow ties are available at davidhartnyc.com and are also available for pre-order online at Bergdorf Goodman.
It's hardly something you think about until you are standing in a department store trying to find a cute but appropriately masculine shower curtain, only to suddenly realize you need cute but appropriately masculine curtain rings as well. Remember, being stylish isn't limited to a wardrobe -- it should be illustrated in all areas of your life, including bathroom decor.
That being said, we love the Kontextür line of shower rings for their unique, modern shapes and wide array of colors. Further, not only are they functional and fashionable, but also reasonable at $85 for a set of twelve.
Face it boys -- we live in a stylized world where everything from the sink to the trash can is an object d'art. Don't stop short at the shower.
Let's face it, the world is doomed. And in a post-apocalyptic world, you're still going to need to look post-apocalyptically fabulous. Cue the Landmine jacket (such appropriate nomenclature) from Howe's White label, a 12 piece capsule collection for the holidays. The jacket looks as tough as it does stylish and it's a great mix of a pea coat and a trench, with enough pockets, shoulder patches and epaulets to give you that hardcore military look while remaining decidedly functional. We also love the double collar. Pop one, pop both, pop neither. At least you'll have options when the world goes to hell.
The Howe White Label Landmine jacket is available at Sak's Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom nation wide, and hauseofhowe.com for $295.
Believe it or not, you can be fashionable and comfortable at the same time. And, believe it even more or not, gays relish the opportunity to do so. (Looking that good can get exhausting).
Thankfully there's Steven Alan and the label's ever increasing surplus of great looking shirts that are versatile enough to wear with a suit or sweats. Our recent favorite is the felt shirt set for an early Spring release in stores, meaning you should be ready to buy one by January. We love the colors, we love the slim but relaxed fit, we love the so-soft-it could-be-your-blanky fabric -- we just plain love it. Throw yours (or your boyfriend's) on and you're sure to love it too. -- SETH PLATTNER
Though some would say it's far too early to be thinking about Spring fashion, here at Out we are always looking for something(s) new to obsess over and we've found plenty in the Spring/Summer 2009 Dior accessories look book we just received.
These days men's jewelry can be somewhat overdone, especially when all we're looking for is a tasteful representation of our stylish, yet simplistic queer selves. So we were delighted to find this Dior brass and lacquer necklace. It's reminiscent of a dog tag, which, while hot in our military fantasies, doesn't quite make the same refined statement as the updated shape and design of the Dior offering.
Also among the pages of Dior delicacies were these retro-inspired calf-skin belts: The geometric buckles are eye-catching enough for queer taste, but throw on the hot pink variety and it's 'mo fab, 'mo fun. Pair with these white calfskin derby shoes and the '80s-glam look you've fashioned might just be too hot to handle. Winter hasn't even arrived but with offerings like these, Dior already has us X-ing off the days on our calendars until the first day of spring (shopping).
The fashion blogosphere has been a bit flustered by the release of Tom Ford's new men's fur boot collection, partly because they are so outrageously expensive ($4,470 to $9,240) and secondly because, well, they're sort of tacky.
But we love them! How can you not want to don a pair of these fabulously furry galoshes and go breathe in the crisp mountain air? We get that these aren't your every day boot, especially for city dwellers, but as the cold weather moves in we're getting that itch for a snowy getaway to a high-altitude locale. These boots, while guaranteed to be warm, will also look great with our ski suits while we sip hot chocolate and check out the hot mountain men.
Gay men love fashion, and fashion loves gay men. Is it something in our jeans? Celebrating this long tradition, Truman Says exists to offer advice, tips, and the occasional catty observation on celebrity style coups and faux pas.
